PLAYOFFS BEGIN...

The Giants lose a meanless game, but the big question is who's coming to the Meadowlands in two weeks? A bigger question...who replaces Sam Madison in the secondary? He's done with a broken ankle...

I never tire of seeing the Cowboys thrashed...so sad....NOT!

Notice how quickly the talk of a Giants-Jets Super Bowl ended...now the question is will the Man-genius and Brett return to Gang Green?

PLAX SHOOTS HIMSELF AGAIN...

In a story that I don't know whether to laugh or shake my head at, Plaxico Burriss is now being sued over a car accident last June in which he didn't have insurance...it lapsed three days earlier due to non-payment of the premium....I can't make this stuff up!

My god - he needs some serious help in managing his life...

Let's see someone defend him on the Giants now....

THAT'S MORE LIKE IT!

It wasn't pretty in the first half, but when crunch time hit, the Giants made it count...an overtime 34-38 win means the road to the Super Bowl in the NFC goes thru the Meadowlands. Great games for Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward....Next week's game with Minnesota is meaningless except in y house, where my sister cheers for the Vikes...

I thought the most enjoyable game to watch was the saturday night Dallas meltdown....I couldn't believe they got burned twice in the last 3 mins. And with the Eagles loss, that sets up a win or you are out situation for both teams...how great is that!

Friday, December 19, 2008

GOOD NEWS...

Reports are Brandon Jacobs will be in the backfield Sunday when the Giants face Carolina...that's the type of break we need...

Giants sending 6 to Pro Bowl...that's nice after only one last year...Gotta wonder what Lawrence Tynes is thinking these days...John Carney replaces him and goes to the Pro Bowl...and he's now healthy....

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

CONCERNS GROWING...

Another stinker of a performance and the Giants are suddenly average...Big Blue now faces a must win for homefield advantage thruout and a first round bye against Carolina...

Not much to say about Sunday...Dallas showed everyone why they were the pick for the Super Bowl in the NFC...but they aren't there yet....A good performance this Sunday night would turn the doubts into believers...

But, as I said last week...without Brandon Jacobs, this is a truly average offense...

Monday, December 8, 2008

A BIG BLUE DISASTER WITH A SILVER LINING

An awful game no matter how you look at it as the Eagles controlled the ball and the game from the outset. The only good thing...the NFC East is ours, and a first round bye on the table Sunday night against Dallas.

You have to be concerned about Brandon Jacobs recurring injuries....the Giants are best when all three backs are healthy...2 out of 3 is bad...

On a day like yesterday, does home field really matter?

The only thing worse than the Giants game was the Jets in SF...that loss will come back to haunt them (and the Oakland one, too).

SMITH ROBBED...AT GUNPOINT

Giants wideout Steve Smith was robbed outside his home in Clifton by someone who is still at large. Kinda ironic, don't you think? As someone said, it could have been Plax....

GIANTS TELL PLAX TO GO

I was curious to see how the Giants and/or the NFL would handle this situation...Report say the Giants trainer told the team he's out for 4-6 weeks with the gunshot wound....so the team suspends him for four games (the regular season) and places him on the non-football injury list which means he's done for the season...Since his criminal case isn't till March, the team obviously is hoping for that to be resolved before having to make a decision. I think he's done, I can't see anyway for him to avoid jail time and that would give the Giants an out to let him go..

If you remember, I said giving him a contract extension was a mistake...the question now is how big of one...

Monday, December 1, 2008

ANOTHER WIN...

I doubt anyone really sweated the game...the Giants offense continues to hum along - Eli throws for 300 yards...doesn't miss Plaxi-gun...Defense continues to impress...

Giants can clinch division and 1st round bye with win over Eagles Sunday.....

Sunday, November 30, 2008

OOPS HE DID IT AGAIN....

After being declared out of Sunday's game with a hamstring injury, WR Plaxico Burress continued his year of living stupidly and ended up with a self inflicted gunshot wound in his right leg. And this is the franchise wideout the Giants gave big money to...I can't help but think the Steelers are laughing their heads off.... The NY Post sez it all - GIANT JERK SHOOTS HIMSELF.
This latest incident may be the straw that breaks the camels back....he's been fined, suspended, and fined again for various infractions...but now, he faces serious gun charges...probably an NFL conduct suspension...and alot of questions...

The question is...how will this distraction affect the team?

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

ANOTHER GLORIOUS WIN

And the Giants continue to impress...without Plaxico and Brandon, they still find a way to win...Dominik Hixon has become a big weapon and a big part of the offense. Next week - Washington...

Nice article on Toomer Sunday in the Star-Ledger...this could be it for him...

Enjoy Thanksgiving!

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

ANOTHER WIN.....

The Giants roll and now travel to Atrzona to see if the Cards are for real....Nice game for the team...running game is awesome...I'm starting to think the Giants can make it 2 super bowls in a row...

How funny would this be - Tennessee and the Giants in Tampa - Tennessee 18-0...and the Giants do it again....that would be unreal...

Monday, November 10, 2008

BEAT THE BIRDS...

A good win for Big Blue...now at 8-1, they stand alone in the East...but, they need to keep healthy and keep winning...

Could Tynes be back soon? He was active and kicked off.....

Whereas for the first couple of years, Coughlin couldn't do anything right...Now, everything he does is right...amazing how people change....

Baltimore next week....

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

TYREE DILEMMA

The Giants have to decide what to do with Super Bowl Hero David Tyree...signs point to him not seeing the field this season in blue....his situation/injury almost mirrors another hero of last year, Lawrence Tynes...you wonder if the Giants will let Tynes kick anytime soon....

A BIG WIN AGAINST THE COWGIRLS...

Not much to say...The Giants outgunned a depleted Dallas team....now it's the Eagles - this one will be tough....

Monday, October 27, 2008

SUPER BOWL PREVIEW?

Great win...Defense was outstanding down the stretch...The key play in my mind was the fourth down conversation pass to Toomer that lead to the 4th FG...that was huge after the confusion and delay of game penalty...

The Plaxico issues continue...sat at the start of the game and fined for more absenteeism...Did you see him motioning Eli to spike the ball after the time out before the penalty on the 4th down play which preceded? Where was his head at?

Another big game Sunday...Dallas - might be a good time to catch them, but the G-men must play better....

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

AN UGLY WIN, BUT MOVING ON...

Sunday's win was ugly...what happened to the running game in the 2nd half?

Now it's time to get serious...Pittsburgh, Dallas and Philly in a row..this will be difficult, but we will see how good the G-Men really are...
Of course, we have the sideshow that is Plaxico going back to Pittsburgh....

GIANTS FANS...HERE'S YOUR CHANCE TO BE A STAR!

Got an e-mail from the folks at Samsung...they will be in the North jersey area this weekend filming fans for their Super Bowl TV ad...here's the details:

Samsung, The Official HDTV of the NFL, is looking for fans to come out and share their stories of "That's How I See It" with a chance to have their story turned into a commercial that will air on NBC during the pregame show of Super Bowl XLIII on Feb. 1, 2009.
Fans are invited to stop by the NFL Super Ad mobile studio this weekend at Best Buy in Iselin, NJ and Giants Stadium to tell their story of pregame rituals, family traditions surrounding the NFL or defining moments while watching football. WHERE:Oct. 18 – Best Buy - Woodbridge - 675 US Highway 1SIselin, NJ 088301 -5 p.m.

The NFL Super Ad mobile studio will be making up to 20 stops in various NFL markets at stadiums and at Samsung's retail partner Best Buy now through Oct.

In response to a comment, I checked the rules and it's only open to those 18 and older....

UGH! NOT A GOOD NIGHT....

You knew it was going to happen...The G-Men come crashing back to Earth. Monday's game is just a blip, but with a very tough 2nd half schedule - every win now is important...the good news is the Giants get San Fran Sunday and they should win that one before a tough match with the Steelers.
A fitting post-script to Monday's game...spent the 1st half at my neighbor's house (a Browns fan) and found a couple of notes on my car about the Browns win. When I came home Tuesday around 11am, I found a dead squirrel in the street in front of my house...resisted the temptation of leaving it at the neighbor's with a sign GIANTS OFFENSE...

MORE PLAX PROBLEMS...

http://www.nypost.com/seven/10082008/sports/giants/rental_car_trouble_for_burress_132576.htm

This latest story really has me scratching my head...but then again, why does it surprise me? If you've been reading this column all along, you know I'm not a big Plaxico fan...I think the Giants made a mistake giving him an extension...his behavior and antics will hurt the team rather than help it. He's one of those athletes who just doesn't get it...and with Drew Rosenhaus around to enable him, he will never grow up. I just hope he's smart with his money...otherwise, he'll be another sad case of a ballplayer who never grew up and does something stupid (see OJ, Jim Leyritz, & Rae Carruth).

Monday night awaits against the Cleveburgh Browns...

Monday, October 6, 2008

EASY WIN...

Another convincing win...Giants showing their WR depth, jacobs with a nice game...get the backups in for some game action....

Got an e-mail from the new Sports Museum of America in NYC...Mark Bavaro will be at the Sports Museum of America Tuesday 10/7 from 12:00-2:00 pm meeting fans and signing copies of his new book "Rough & Tumble." The book signing will take place in the SmA Retail Store located at 9 Beaver Street @ Broadway.
Visitors to the Museum can see, touch and take their picture with the Heisman Trophy, vote for this year's Heisman Trophy winner and visit our football gallery which features Superbowl helmets from David Tyree and Eli Manning in a special, temporary exhibit.

I've gotta check it out...

INTERESTING OFF WEEK

The Giants sit alone on top of the division as the only unbeaten...can't believe the Cowgirls lost...watch out for the Skins...they are starting to get better...
It should be another win this sunday against Seattle, but I can't help but wonder if the Giants get bitten by the upset bug....

Saturday, September 27, 2008

R.I.P DICK LYNCH

He is probably best known as the Giants radio analyst for thepast 40 years, but he was a pretty good player in his day. He was not the polished professional broadcaster some are, but he was a Giants man, a favorite of owner Wellington Mara...
His last game - Super Bowl 42...that says alot about the man, take care, Dick....

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

PLAX SUSPENDED...

The news is not good...Plaxico Burress has been suspended by the Giants for two weeks - he'll miss one game since the Giants are on the bye this week. According to Jay Glazer of FoxSports.com, He hasn't been around for meetings the last two days nor has he phoned. Coach Tom Coughlin said he met with him today and his excuses were unacceptable.
My thoughts - This may be the start of issues with #17...the G-men may come to regret their contract extension with him....

Monday, September 22, 2008

A WIN STILL COUNTS AS A WIN...

It's the type of game Ginatrs fans have come to expect over the years...predictions of a big win melt into a tough game and a close shave...Give props to Amani "It's Not A" Toomer - what a great catch to set up the win....and props to John Carney - although he's probably headed out the door since Lawrence Tynes should be ready for Seattle after the bye...

A week off....yeah!

Monday, September 15, 2008

ON THE ROAD AGAIN...

Another workman like win for Big Blue...a close game up until the fourth quarter when the defense got busy...
Love the description of the three RB's - Earth, Wind & Fire (one of my favorite 70's groups)...now we need to decide who's who...
A big chance to go 3-0 with Cincy this Sunday...your typical trap game with the bye coming the following week...

Thursday, September 11, 2008

AN EASY WIN????

After watching the Rams performance against the Eagles, I can't help but think we are headed to 2-0...and if the Bengals continue to have offensive problems...3-0.

Not surprised K Jay Feely goes to the Jets...he knows how to kick in Giants Stadium...

Looking for more consistancy this week from offense...scoring in more than one quarter or half...

Thursday, September 4, 2008

GOTTA LIKE WHAT YOU SEE

The Giants dominated the first half and the defense played very well. Would have liked to see more scoring from the offense, but a win is a win...and a division one at that. One down....

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

WHAT TIME IS IT? KICKOFF!!!!

Thursday is here...the night we've been waiting for...the kickoff of the season...the Giants looks to defend the title...YESSSS!!!!
Tonight's game will be a test to see where we stand...the Skins have a new coach (AGAIN!) and are banged up defensively...remember what happened last November? Time for some revenge....

Monday, September 1, 2008

GIANTS SIGN EX-EAGLE & KICKER

To shore up the defensive front line, the Giants sign ex-Eagle Jerome McDougle...nice move. He's had a decent camp in Philly...somewhat surprising Phily let him go. He's had all sorts of injury issues...but if he can stay healthly, it's a good move...

Kinda surprised John Carney is with the G-men - thought Josh Huston would be the kicker until Tynes is ready, but if Carney is still strong, this is a good pickup...a little birdie tells me Tynes' injury might be more serious than first thought...I'm guessing he's out until at least after the bye in week 4...

Looking at the schedule...I'm thinking 2-1 heading into the bye...Thursday's a toughie the next two are very winnable...

Kickoff Thursday night

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

NO STRAHAN...AND THE JETS SCREW GIANTS FANS

#92 will stay retired...no surprise...he gave it some thought, but said he's staying with Fox. The Giants will have to make do with Kiwanuka moving back to the line.

I knew the Jets would do something to screw the Giants on this PSL situation...the upper seats won't have a PSL price on them. The Jets look good to the small guy, and the Giants look greedy. And so it goes...

Monday, August 25, 2008

OSI OUT; STRAHAN RETURN?

The news about Osi Umenyiora's knee injury is worse than they thought. He's done for the year...now I like many other Giants fans wonder - has GM Jerry Reese called Michael Strahan? The recent retiree might be interested in paying if the money is right. He was siad to be seeking $8 mill like Jason Taylor with the Skins is getting.
According to the Daily News, he night be up for a return...but then again, is he in football shape? Then again, he missed training camp last year and came in just before the season began...Time will tell...

Oh yeah - the Jets won Saturday...did anybody care?

Monday, August 18, 2008

PRESEASON GAME 2...

Back from Vacation...ready for football. The G-Men play Cleveland in their 2nd preseason tussle. Nothing overly compelling about this one...the game to watch is next week - the annual battle of the Meadowlands...

Just a reminder - I'm in for Kevin Williams in the Locker Room this week - Fantasy football fans will want to tune in for Fantasy Training Camp each day at 5:05...

Thursday, August 7, 2008

JET BRETT...

So, Farve goes to Gang Green...for Giants fans, it doesn't mean much, except it hurts Green Bay, and makes the Jets matter this season...
Opening night tonight...let's hope no serious injuries against the Lions...

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

FIRST PRESEASON GAME DAWNS...

Tomorrow night, the G-Men are back on the field against Detroit. These games don't mean much...just a way to play your way back into shape. Training camp has been uneventful..

The Brett Farve situation has been interesting, but then again, you didn't really think he'd retire, did you....

Been going on stations around the country talking about the Giants and to be truthful, I really don't have a feel for how they will do this year....history isn't very positive, but then the rest of the division has questions, except for Dallas....

Thursday, July 24, 2008

SHOCKEY GONE...

You can blame the Giants for getting rid of #80...I've said it before, he's a distraction who thinks the grass is greener on the other side of the street...Goodbye - mI'm sure alot of endorsements will be coming your way in New Orleans...

G-Men open camp today...as defending Super Bowl Champs....

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

BRADSHAW IN HOT WATER?

Now that Ahmad Bradshaw is out of the slammer, the real question is...will he face additional consequences from the NFL? and what about the Giants - how do they feel about one of their rising stars locked up for 30 days? I'll be curious how this one palys out...

Giants sign their 3rd round pick WR Mario Manningham...I wonder if he can keep his nose clean in NYC?

Training camp starts soon, ladies...before you know it, the first Thursday in September will be here...

Tuesday, July 8, 2008

BURRISS SPEAKS...WHO CARES?

Plaxico Burriss says he was 'bored' at training camp. In his book, he admitted not having his head in the game. And he's getting a new contract with 3 years left on the deal....absolutely disgusting...what a jackass...

He also says Shockey wants the team to appreciate him and want him there...again...who cares?

Thursday, June 26, 2008

SNEE GETS NEW CONTRACT

Can't say I'm surprised...his father-in-law is the head coach, but it continues a Giants trend - locking up key components with contract extensions. Snee has been one of the more valuable linemen in recent times, and a 'good egg' which is why he got locked up.
Note to Shockey: That could have been you if you kept your mouth shut...

One other quick note - Rumors have Giants Play-by-Play voice Bob Papa in line for the NFL Network gig replacing Bryant Gumbel...would be some nice exposure for someone who's gathering an impressive resume of jobs. He'll be at the Olympics for NBC in August, so he'll miss a couple of pre-season tilts...

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

STRAHAN TO FOX PRE-GAME

I can't say I was surprised by the announcement...his personality will work well with the Foxies and since he's got a place on the West Coast, it helps him establish a new life. The only issue is are there too many voices on the show now...or are they preparing for someone to leave????
Will be curious to see if Strahan does any game commentary at some point...he's got a good sense of the game which would translate into color work.

THE FAT MAN HAS LEFT THE BUILDING...

The Giants continue to make plans for training camp and axed four players from the roster - no surprises even though the Fat Man QB Jared Lorensen was cut. With the addition of David Carr and Anthony Wright, you knew he was out the door. But still, he got a Super Bowl ring in his time with NY.

Monday, June 16, 2008

IT'S GONNA BE A LOOOONG SEASON!

Just some notes and thoughts from the weekend...

I can't help but think the Giants locker room is becoming a battleground...all of the togetherness is being ripped apart by the selfish attitudes or certain players...and Michael Strahan's retirement leaves a big hole in the leadership of this team. I will be curious to see what happens in the coming weeks.

The list of players who are looking for new contracts is long...expect some surprises in training camp - some might be cut....

Friday, June 13, 2008

BURRISS NOT HAPPY...WHAT ELSE IS NEW?

You knew it was coming...Plaxico Burriss is showing everyone why Pittsburgh gave up on him...shooting his mouth off and being a baby as minicamp rolls on. Now, Shawn O'Hara has called him out for his selfishness. Here comes the post Super Bowl hangover...why do I think this will be a lousy year, when everything points to the G-Men being able to repeat?

Sigh...it's not even training camp and I'm depressed...

Monday, June 9, 2008

SO LONG STRAHAN...

I can't say I was really surprised when Kevin Williams told me that #92 had decided to call it a career. I'd mentioned in previous blogs that I thought he would retire. And I think the Giants knew, too. The Reynaldo Wynn signing told you that.
I also think he was closer to retiring last year than everyone thinks...but he wanted to come back for one more go at a Super Bowl ring and to walk away on a high note after two injury filled campaigns. Now, he walks away with his place in Giant history secured.
Since it was first announced on FoxSports.com, I'm betting he ends up there in some capacity doing football.

NOTE TO SHOCKEY: SHUT UP!

TE Jeremy Shockey is shooting his mouth off...again! He broke his leg against Washington towards the end of the season and missed the Giants Super Bowl run. And the emergence of Kevin Boss might make his expendable. Shockey is also seeking a new contract, but his skills and production have been now where near his mouth. He needs to shut up, play injury free and contribute...am I the only one who's been disappointed about him over the years?

Friday, May 30, 2008

TALK ABOUT THE BLING...

The Giant's magical year hits it's official end as the team gets their championship rings last night. It seems strange to do it now, but the end of minicamp is usally when team's give them out given the time it takes to have them made...now, it's time for reality...and the 2008 season...Training camp in less than 6 weeks...

Friday, May 16, 2008

8 MILLION FOR STRAHAN?

Reports in the newspaper today say Strahan was promised he's be taken care of by the team, and he wants $8 mill to come back this year. While I would love to see #92 back, I'm not sure the Giants want to break the bank...I still say he should head to retirement...

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

STRAHAN BACK?

It's not a definate yes, but Coach Tom Coughlin says he's been spotted working out at Giants Stadium. I am one of those who thinks he might want to hang them up after the Super Bowl win.

#21 - Kenny Philips...wonder how that will play this year? The Giants first round pick says it's a tribute to the late Sean Taylor, but some fans might not appreciate his taking Tiki's number. But then again, after the termoil of his last year, and winning the big game after he leaves, there might not be that big of an objection...

Friday, May 2, 2008

DRAFT/WHITE HOUSE

I like the first pick last weekend...fills a need and he can play. When you draft as low as the G-Men, you usually go after the best available athlete.

Good to see Jets fans moan and complain after their targets in the first round moved off the board one by one.

Gotta love when a championship team visits the White House...one of the perks of winning. But, I doubt the President would be caught dead in the jersey back in his home state.

How many days till training camp?

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

WILL HE OR WON'T HE????

One of the big questions for the Super Bowl Champs - will Michael Strahan coem back next year? He's got a great future in TV and I'm not sure he really wants to face another year of battle. But, with his divorce settlement, he might need another year of football money to set himself up. That will be an ongoing question until he answers it himself.

Monday, April 7, 2008

DRAFT DAY COMING...

As the calendar turns into April, time for NFL fans to start thinking draft...of course, Giants fans really don't have much to anticipate since as Champions, they draft last in each round. But, still, it's a chance to get excited about football for one weekend in April. Curious to see where the Giants need to go...

By the way, I'll be guest-hosting the Locker Room this Thursday 4/10 from 3-6p and one of my guests will be Adam Kaplan of FootballInjuries.com - he's shed some light on the G-men.

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

THE RING...

It's big, and will last a lifetime...the ring signifying the Giants win in Super Bowl 42. It was unveiled yesterday...I know there are fans who would covet one in their collection...but, they weren't the ones who earned it. The players and coaches deserve them.

A FAN'S DISGUST.....

There was an announcement last week about the Giants raising their ticket prices about 7%...no surprise after winning the Super Bowl. But, the experience I had buying tickets for another NY team makes this worth mentioning.

First some background - I've been a lifelong Yankees fan and attended my first game on June 8, 1968. My father purchased box seats about 12 rows from the field. I still have the ticket stub...the tickets were $8 each. A few years later, a neighbor gave me a seat from the original Yankee Stadium they had bought and I still have it. It's a curiosity piece to my 11 year old daughter.
With this being the last season at the original stadium, I thought I'd take my daughter to a game to let her see where the seat came from. Now, I know ticket prices for box seats are expensive, but I'd pay for the experience for my daughter - after all, part of being a father is sharing some of the things you had as a child. Well, I'm either the father of the year or the biggest sucker on the planet - for a box seat to a Yankees game - it costs $280 each. I spend almost $600 to give my daughter the same experience my father paid less than $20 for 40 years ago.
I'm absolutely stunned...and I remembered how I thought pro football tickets were so expensive when I was young. It's amazing how football is now considered a reasonably priced ticket when compared to baseball, which has 10 times the number of home games and in some cases, costs 2 to 3 times more per ticket. And baseball wonders why fans are turned off the game....By the way, a quick check shows the Mets charge $117 and the Red Sox charge $125 for the comparable seat...

It's a sad reality - I'll go to the game and enjoy the experience with my daughter, realizing I will be giving her something that's out of reach for alot of kids...but, it will be a looooong time before I set foot in the new Yankee Stadium. Guess I'll move my seat into the living room and sit there to watch games...

Monday, March 17, 2008

ANOTHER GOOD SIGNING...

QB David Carr gets a deal fromt he Giants to backup Eli...and I can't quibble about this signing. He's a decent experienced backup if the need arises...Looks like the Fat Guy will be on his way off the roster...

Saturday, March 15, 2008

WARD BACK IN FOLD...

More good news for Big Blue...RB Derrick Ward, one of the pleasant surprises this season, is back...signed a contract after being a free agent. Let's hope he stays relatively injury free...

Monday, March 10, 2008

DOES $$$$$ BUY CHAMPIONSHIPS???

As the off-season rolls on, the question Giants fans are wondering - can money buy you a championship? With the Jets opening their pocketbooks and playing alot of green to improve their team...do the Giants have to answer? Well, let's see - the Giants were free agent players two years ago (signed a bunch of defensive players) and made the playoffs, but lost in the first round. Last year, they laid low...and won the Super Bowl.
It was interesting to see the observation that Gang Green is built to win now and the Mangenius has no excuse for not making the playoffs with all the money invested.

BRETT FARVE IS BRETT FARVE IS...

...RETIRED!!!! A somewhat surprising announcement out of Green Bay Tuesday afternoon, that Farve will hang up his shoulder pads. His last game was that loss to the Giants in January.

I don't know if it's me or what, but, I can't get into any football talk...I still want to enjoy the Super Bowl win...guess there's little time to do that these days...

Don't look now, but the J-E-T-S are spending big bucks to rebuild in a hurry...but that doesn't always win championships (see Mini-Me in Washington and Jerry Jones in Dallas)

Monday, March 3, 2008

THE EXODUS BEGINS!!!!

As the free agency period begins, the Super Bowl exodus starts...already the G-men lose a key LB and DB, as the players cash in on their team's success. Can't blame them...there's a limited window of opportunity to make big $$$$. But, now you know why it's sooooo tough to repeat and build a dynasty - players take the $$$ and run after a Super Bowl win. As time goes on, we begin to appreciate teams who are consistant winners every year...while neither one Super Bowls, the Bills 4 straight Super Bowls and the Eagles 3 straight championship game appearances are impressive for the way the team's continued success even after players left for greener pastures. GM Jerry Reese will have his hands full trying to make it 4 straight playoff appearances.

A QUESTION DESERVING OF SOME THOUGHT...

A buddy asked me recently if this win by the Giants was any different than the other two Super Bowl wins...my first thought was yes, since we'd been embarrassed in 2001 by the Ravens and it's been 17 years since the last one. But as I reflect on it, each win has special meaning to me as a lifelong Giants fan.

The first in 1987 meant our team had finally made and played in the Super Bowl, a game we'd watched for the previous two decades while the team floundered. And in that game, we were a huge favorite over Denver.

The second win came after the big upset of the 49'ers in the NFC championship and we were the underdogs in the game. Plus, the last minute thrill of the missed FG...that was sweet...

This time, the G-men changed history and no one expected them to do it....it was an improbable season given the way it started - 0-2 and down at halftime of the 3rd game...Let's face it...anytime you win the big game, it's special...

I should mention the person who asked is a Viking fan...and they've never experienced a Super Bowl win...:-)

FORGIVE ME IF MY STOMACH TURNS....

Reports say Plaxico Burrus might be looking for a new deal...and my stomach turned when I heard who is aget was - Drew Rosenhaus. He of the TO debacle with the Eagles...this is not good, folks...this has no upside, and could be why the Steelers let Plax go...

Notice everyone is flocking to meet anyone from the Giants who appears at the Jersey Shore...welcome to the off-season for the champs...

COUGHLIN'S REWARD...

Reports say Head Coach Tom Coughlin's reward for a Super Bowl win will be a contract extension of 4 years. Not a surprise, given the sucess they Giants have enjoyed and his makeover as a warm and fuzzy coach. Let's face it...the Giants have had a run over the last 3 years like they enjoyed when the Big Tuna was at the helm in the 80's - with Coughlin as one of his assistants...

A DOG STORY...

By now, you've heard of the Antonio Pierce story. He's charged with animal cruelty by leaving his dogs home alone in the days prior to the NFC title game. Then again, you might not have heard about it since it's been somewhat under the radar in the aftermath of the Giants SB win. It's a sad reality for people who have pets and can't always get someone to take care of them or trust someone to come take care of them. That is what's stopping me from getting a pet, since I keep such crazy hours and am never home on a regular schedule. Still, some do it anyway, and let the animal suffer....
I understand people's attachment to animals and why they want to keep them around all the time, but when the animal causes you to bring them to the office and threatens your job, it's an unhealthy obsession. Since I work in broadcasting, it goes without saying we have alot of expensive equipment which could get ruined easily. I know one person who kept bringing their dog to work and letting him run around the building (He did it one night when I was on the air and got the scare of my life when he ran into the studio and at another remote broadcast, the dog was there and my daughter practically climbed on top of my head to get away from it - it was a rather large, 'friendly' dog). He was warned to stop and one day, he did it not expecting anyone to be there and the boss showed up. Needless to say, he was fired. Another instance - having just moved into a new building, one dog owner brought his pet in just to finish up some work. The dog peed on the floor on one of the rubber ramps leading to the radio studios, a stain which lasted for a couple of years. He never did that again....

OK, off my soapbox.... NFL scouting combines are coming up - it will be interesting to see how Rutgers RB Ray Rice does...heard some rumblings he could go in the 2nd round....

TWO THUMBS UP FOR...

The NY Daily News...They had a great commerative section last Sunday on the Giants season which if you know someone who has it, get it. Enjoyed reading and reliving the season.

SIGNINGS!!!!!

The Giants resign both kickers to new deals and I say good! One thing about NFL contracts unlike any other sport - they aren't guaranteed. If Lawrence Tynes doesn't cut it, he'll get the ax and a new kicker takes his place. That's why you see those cap casualities every year...too much money owed to a player who was good and got a big payday earlier in their career...

But, I am happy to see the team recognize the job both did. Thought possibly Feagles might retire since he already did once and the G-Men brought him back.

JUMP ON THE BANDWAGON!!!!

It amazing to see everyone come out selling EXCLUSIVE SUPER BOWL CHAMPION (fill in the blank). I'll admit...I've gone for the medallion football with all the Super Bowl Champs on it, a couple of shirts, pins and a sign...but some folks are going nuts buying this stuff. Hey, to each his own. I'm just happy to see a win!

Kinda ironic watching to Pro Bowl with only one Giant in it...but they talked to Osi right at the beginning of the game...would Fox have even bothered with him if they lost?

And now the speculation begins to stur...what to do about Shockey? I think they need him and he makes the offense better....enough said...

A SHOPPING I WILL GO....

What did Wilma and Betty shout as they went shopping....CHARGE IT! That's what many Giants fans are doing at stores all over the area. SB XLII Championship stuff is coming in by the tons...I dropped some coin on a couple of pins, shirts and other stuff at the place you've gotta go to....and I wasn't the only one. For the record, I like the shirt which features the 3 Super Bowl wins for the team. One funny thing - there were signs already trumpeting the soon arriving Johan Santana Met Jerseys and T-Shirts with his number....

The biggest problem I found...not enough XXL shirts in the style I liked in one store. The problem of being 'stout'....

ONE THING I FORGOT....

I mentioned the memory of Wellington Mara last week...and Sunday Night, I was thinking how much he had to be enjoying this...somewhere, the man who was the Giants for so many years was smiling....

Let the marketing begin...gotta love the new t-shirt celebrating the 3 Super Bowl Championships for the Giants (Take that Eagles fans). Yes, I already ordered a bunch of stuff on nfl.com. I guess I was caught up in the excitement....

You have to love the celebration - for all the grief we've given the team and how little we expected of them in the playoffs...they deserve some recognition. I'm sorry the earlier Giants teams didn't get a ticker-tape celebration...

A CELEBRATION!!!!!!!!!

The Giants will finally get a ride thru the Canyon of Heroes in Lower Manhattan...you will recall alot of animosity between then Mayor Koch and the team during their last two Super Bowl wins and no parade. I also applaud the Giants for holding a celebration at Giants Stadium, the scene of their last two victory celebrations...

In talking to folks, everyone still seems amazed David Tyree caught that pass on the last drive...someone mentioned they keep rerunning it on their TiVO waiting for him to drop it....

Another funny thing...I've heard from alot of people their first reaction after it was over was (blank) the Patriots!!!!! and I can't say I disagree. The Pats are a victim of their own doing...the spygate thing early in the season made them the enemy to all in the NFL...

Didn't get much of a chance to read the papers yesterday (bought them all), but one thing did strike me - how many writiers were calling for the head of Coughlin a year ago at this time? Ah, how time changes everything...

UNBELIEVIABLE!!!!!!!!

I think at the beginning of the season, if you said a Manning would lead his team to a last minute TD and win the Super Bowl and the game MVP, you would have said Peyton, but he was right there cheering on little brother as Eli and the Giants play Giant Killers to the Pats perfect season.

WHAT A GAME!!!!!!! The Giants played well, and did everything they needed to to win. The defense kept Moss bottled up, the offense was mistake-free for the most part and Eli came up big. This was a win for the ages....and you have to wonder where this will lead...it's been 17 years since our last title and 7 years since our last Super Bowl.

One last thing - wonder what Tiki was thinking??????

3 DAYS TO KICKOFF...A PREDICTION

As the game draws near, I keep thinking about one man who was the NY GIANTS franchise - Wellington Mara. I thought the Asbury Park Press story yesterday made a good point...he would have loved this team. I got to meet and talk to the man covering the Giants during their glory years in the mid-80's and he was as down to earth as they come. I loved his boys in blue and somewhere, is smiling right now for their accomplishments. I was struck by his son following in his tradition of meeting the players in the locker room and shaking their hands after winning against the Packers. No sideline showboating for the Maras...that's a tribute to Mr. Mara.

This will come as no surprise - I think the Giants can win on Sunday...It comes down to the same things we've been saying for three weeks:
1) Eli must be mistake-free
2) Control the line of scrimmage on both sides
3) Defense must limit the big plays

On Eli - I feel about him as I did about Rex Grossman last year - can he have a good game when it counts? This is the biggest stage - I think the fact his brother played last year and he was there may help him in this respect.
The offense will have to play ball control, much like the Giants did against the Bills in '91. If they have a decided edge in time of possession, that helps the defense. They also must score touchdowns...field goals won't cut it...
The defense needs to continue to limit big plays...the Pats haven't been the same kigh scoring machine since opponents started keying on Randy Moss...they haven't been the offensive juggernaut in the last 6 weeks...and the Giants played with them for 4 quarters.

Two other points - Yes, Belicheat's won 5 Super Bowls as an assistant and head coach, but the last 4 wins have been by a field goal or less...the law of averages will catch up to you...
Number 2 - the Giants in their last two playoff games beat opponents who beat them in the regular season...three is a magic number...

In the end...Giants win 24-23. I said the last time the Giants won the big game that I never know when they will be there again, but this one was sweet. I also remember how the last trip to the Super Bowl ended up being a two hour pregame for Survivor...I hope we can enjoy this one...

4 DAYS TO KICKOFF!!!

Memo to Plaxico - SHUT UP!!!!!!! As someone told me, what do you expect him to say - the Pats will win? What he's done is put a bullseye on his back - if they win, he's a hero - if they lose, he's a loud mouth (we already know that).

Got my supplies for Sunday - Wings, Veggie Platter, Chips...beer run Saturday...box pool sheet for entertainment purposes...

I don't understand what the big deal on the Patriots book is...18-1 is still an interesting story.....

Prediction tomorrow

5 DAYS TO KICKOFF!!!!

The annual exercise is stupidity known as Super Bowl Media Day is over...the lady in the wedding dress got her 2 minutes of fame north of the border - now go back home. I enjoyed the comments of Toomer about getting there for a second time...He and Strahan were around for the last trip and they don't want a repeat of the embarrassing loss to the Ravens.

You are starting to see articles pop up on how the Giants can win the game...they say the same thing I've been saying for four weeks...no mistakes on offense, control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the line, and defense must limit the other team's big plays. An interesting point - the last interception by Eli was against the Pats, the last time the Giants lost...

I dug out an old headline montage I put together after the Giants NFC Title win against the Vikings - a sweet win since my sister has been a Vikings fan since we were kids. Funny how Jim Fassel was hailed as a genius back then...now, it looks like he's headed to Washington - wonder if the Skins fans will hail him as a genius or he'll become another disaster for Mini-Me Snyder...

6 DAYS TO GO!

Gotta admit the 'Men in Black' idea was a good one...The G-Men have landed in Arizona...

One story which will be talked about is Punter Jeff Feagles - He was set to retire a couple of seasons ago, but his family talked him out of it...and finally, he gets to a Super Bowl. Those are the feel-good you love to hear....

Today is Media Day....a mass press event which allows all assembled media to speak with everyone and anyone on the team...it also gives folks a look at the Super Bowl stadium. It was a very interesting experience when I covered the game three years ago...Get ready for alot of stupid questions and answers....

I enjoyed USA Today's article on Monday on footballspeak...Joe Buck's NY Football Giants line was funny, but a throwback to the days when both baseball's and football's Giants played in the same city and the same field (Polo Grounds). I have to laugh also when you do an EBay search for Giants and get all the San Fran team stuff...gotta remember to put NY in there...

7 DAYS TO KICKOFF!!!!

Notice how much different Super Bowl week feels this year with our team playing in it? There's a bounce in our step, stores are filled with SB42 memorbillia (got my shirt, jersey and hat), and an anticipation for Sunday...I remember the days counting down to the first Giants trip to Pasadena in 1987...as Dave Klein, a respected writer for the Star-Ledger, now with Giants Today, said to his kids "this was the game the Giants never played in, now they will"...I'm most excited to share this moment with my daughter - she was 4 the last time they played in the Super Bowl and had no idea what it meant. She's the one who told me I was having a Super Bowl party and told me who to invite. Her daddy is bring the buffalo wings to her school Super Bowl party Wednesday and I have to wear my Eli jersey to match hers...

Gotta love some of the articles about the game popping up in the NYC papers. Today's Post gives the rap sheet for the Patriots - 8 players with arrests and records...kinda reminds me of the old Notre Dame/Miami rivalry in college football...did't they call the game 'the convicts vs. the catholics'?

THE QUIET BEFORE THE STORM

It's Friday, the weekend between the Super Bowl and the Championship Games...ewxcitement is building...

The new SI has both Peter King and Dr. Z picking the boys in blue...I can't decide if that's a good thing....

I heard something which makes alot of sense - look for the NFL to move the Super Bowl to Saturday Night in the future. The number of people calling out sick the day after is almost 10 percent...playing the game Saturday would give folks a day to recover and since there's 2 weeks between games, it wouldn't be a hardship for those involved...

Going to rest this weekend...the hype begins Monday!

BRADY - NON ISSUE

Is anyone surprised the Tom Brady injury is a non-issue? OK, I see your hand in Monmouth Beach and yours in Freehold.

In listening and reading various reports and comments about the game Sunday, I have to say I agree with those who trash the Packers coaches...their game plan stunk (of course, Big Blue had something to so with that). As much as the storybook ending would have been for BRETT FARVE to go to the Super Bowl, the Packers beat themselves (and of course, Big Blue had something to so with that, too).

I've kinda settled into a try to forget the game mode for a couple of days....because next week will be HYPE week. Everything you wanted to know about every Giant will be known and discussed.

One note - Love the NY Post article talking about the Giants new GM and how he built the team - REESE'S PIECES. Ha Ha!

Picked up my Locker Room Championship T-Shirt for Super Sunday - it's only $19.99 at a certain sporting goods chain we've got to go to....

Anyone have tickets to sell?

DID YOU NOTICE SUNDAY?

Something I never heard - how the two games featured the two QB's who figured in the '04 draft trade at the top of the draft? Kinda interesting both made it to the title game for the first time the same year.

Also, the two 'best' Quarterbacks in those games both played terribly? Brady won because the Chargers 'D' couldn't contain Maroney in the 2nd half, but he was awful. The NY Post pictures of him in a protective boot on his foot answer part of the question, but will it affect him on February 3rd? And Farve did nothing in the 2nd half and threw the pick that cost them the game.

I thought the comment to surface about the Giants starting to think they could win a championship was after the Patriots game which was their last loss. I agree - up till then, they'd laid an egg everytime they'd face a 'contender'. The close game against New England showed them they could contend. I keep thinking back to 1991...in that season, The Giants lost to Buffalo in the next to last game of the season (Simms was injured in that game, Hostettler became starting QB), but were able to gameplan for the Super Bowl. Does history repeat itself?

I'll say it now - I'm thinking upset.....

THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

THE GIANTS ARE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!!!!

An unbelievable season continues...10 straight road wins! It's Big Blue against Perfection.

Once again, the defense led the way with a key takeaway in OT and Eli played mistake free once again. I thought the offense played well - Plaxico was a monster, & Bradshaw and Jacobs gained ground when they needed to.

Considering no one was expecting anything from the Giants this year, the fact they are the NFC champs is amazing....

I guess I'll be keeping busy for the next two weeks...Next stop: Glendale, Arizona!

SUNDAY LOOMS!

As the clock ticks towards a freezing Sunday in Wisconsin, I noted the number of articles talking about the last time these two teams met in the Championship game. The 61 & 62 Packers were in the heart of a run of championships under Vince Lombardi, ex-Giants offensive genius. Oh how different this might be if Vince had stayed or come back to Big Blue instead of Allie Sherman, Alex Webster, etc.

In less than 24 hours, we could be on Cloud Nine or in the doledrums...we'll know by 10 tomorrow if the 3rd times a charm against Green Bay....

Thursday, January 17, 2008

CRYSTAL BALL TIME....

OK - now it's time for a prediction...As I've said thruout the week, I'm trying to be realistic in my feelings about the game. While we beat Dallas the #1 seed, going into Green Bay and beating the Packers will take another superhuman effort from the defense. They have to hold BRETT FARVE to two TD's or less...the Packers offense can put lots of points on the board and last weekend showed they can play from behind. I've been using the Bears theory from last year about the Giants this year...Defense will carry the team, the QB needs to have a mistake free game. Last year, I knew Grossman would play 2 or 3 games well, but then a clunker which came in the Super Bowl. Eli's the same way - he's been playing well for the last 3 games, his history indicates a clunker is due...the question - is this the week for that? How does Giants 24-23 sound?...in the AFC, the Pats will smoke San Diego 42-3...this one will be over 5 minutes in...

Injury News - CBs Sam Madison and Aaron Ross were limited in practice...but both hope to play. For Madison, it would be his first appearance of the playoff this year.

From the You've Got to Be Kidding department - The NY Daily News had the following item in the TV section Thursday - Fox's Green Bay affiliate, WLUK-TV, has canceled its regular 5:30 p.m. showing of a "Seinfeld" rerun Saturday because it doesn't want to do anything to make life relaxing for quarterback Eli Manning, whose Giants play Green Bay's Packers Sunday for the NFC championship. Manning says "Seinfeld" is his favorite TV show, and WLUK figures 5:30 Saturday is just about when Manning will be relaxing in his hotel room. Eli - bring your DVD's! For those of you who are Seinfeld fanatics, one memorable episode featuring Elaine's boyfriend Joel Rifkin (not the mass murderer) used Giants Stadium as a scene and a shot of LT. " How about changing your name to O.J. Rifkin?"

WHAT COLD?

Much has been made of the frozen tundra at Lambeau Field, but the reality is the Giants home is also outdoors in the Northeast, not exactly known as a winter warm spot. Weather conditions like those in the last game for the Packers cause trouble...clear cold weather makes sitting there watching a miserable experience, but not a playing nightmare. I heard an interesting stat about BRETT FARVE (Thank you, Frank Caliendo) - while he was 34-0 with the temp below freezing, he's only 9-5 in his last 14 sub-freezing starts....One thing I don't look forward to - everyone picking the Pack to win because of America's love affair with BRETT FARVE, because he's BRETT FARVE....

Good news - looks like CB Aaron Ross will be back in the lineup with a shoulder brace.

Three days and counting...

COUNTDOWN TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS!

Sunday night is looming on the horizon....while I look forward to the game, I do so with some trepidation. In a past life, I covered the Eagles professionally, and went through the three straight trips to the NFC Championship games with only one win. In each of those years, I was aware of the mounting injuries and the toll they were taking on the team. And unfortunately, I see some parallels with those Eagle teams in the Giants heading to Sunday in Green Bay. The secondary is banged up, No Shockey...and a team which many feel has overachieved and played their hearts out to get to this point. While a win would be great, I can't say I'm booking a trip to Arizona based on my confidence level.

I can't leave the Dallas game behind without a comment on the Dalls post-game antics. T.O. should be nominated for an Oscar - he's better than Johnny Depp. And Wade Phillips' comments Monday show why he's such a lousy coach...he's a great regular season coach, but playoffs are another story.
Another thought...do you think Romo and Jessica would have gone to Mexico if Parcells was still running the show? I think we all know the answer to that one...

Sunday, January 13, 2008

UNBELIEVABLE!

Every year, I always throw a bet on the Giants to win the NFC and the Super Bowl just for laughs. It paid off in 2000, but this year, I bet against them to win 8 games...so now, they are in the Championship game in Green Bay.
The defense did what I said - hold them to 2 touchdowns...Eli played well again! Now, the D will have to ratchet it up again against Brett Farve again.
Loved the graphic shown at the end of the game - the #1 seeds in the NFC were 17-0 since the current format was adopted. Let's make that 17-1...
Also, loved the shot of Jerry Jones at the end of the game...that's 11 years since their last playoff win...

We can enjoy this one...a trip to the Frozen Tndra is next...

TIED AT THE HALF

I'm pleased with the first half...Giants tied at 14 with the Cowboys, but some things are a bit concerning. The injury bug continues to eat at the secondary...the defense has to stop Marion Barber. But, the offense drive at the end of the half is what we've been hoping for from Eli.

Still 30 minutes to go...can the Giants punch their ticket to Green Bay?

Friday, January 11, 2008

T.O. TO GO...TOLD YOU!

Thursday the news out of Dallas is T.O. will play Sunday...I knew he would!

For the Giants, Shawn O'Hara may be back in the lineup, which is good news.

I'm tryng to keep my thoughts separate from my fan emotions....I can't stand Dallas, and have one of those "My Favorite teams are the Giants and whoever is playing Dallas" shirts. As I hope upon hope Big Blue smokes the boys from Texas, I honestly can't see how the Giants can win unless the D holds Dallas to under 2 touchdowns...and Eli plays mistake free football. Without the two things, I think it might be a long day for Gaints fans.

My other weekend picks - Indy, The Pats & the Pack.

Thursday, January 10, 2008

COUNTDOWN TO SUNDAY...

The clock ticks closer to an appointment with the Cowboys...The Giants are 7 1/2 point dogs in this one. I can't help but think back to when they won their 1st title...had to beat the Redskins 3 times that year. It's not easy to beat a team twice in a season, but 3 times...that's why I like the Giants chances...but we have to get off to a good start. While Eli has played better in the last two games, the offense must get up on the Cowboys. The defense will have it's hands full, although T.O. is a game-time decision (he'll play), there are other weapons on the field. The defense will have to do a better job than they did in the other two games.

Interesting note in the NY Post yesterday...Terry Bradshaw says he's going to retire from the Fox pregame show when his contract expires, and said it would be a perfect spot for Michael Strahan. First off, Bradshaw must be kidding - leave that job! Jimmie Hairdo is older and he's not squawking about leaving...secondly, Strahan will be doing TV by then (2011) and I doubt it will be a pre-game show. He does have the personality and would be a natural for the booth. I'm guessing this is a non-story, just more hype for the game....on Fox....Sunday at 4...just before an all-new Simpsons...and don't forget American Idol's season debut Tuesday at 8 on FOX!

One other note...America's blonde disaster will not attend the game...she's working on a album. Darn...I'm guessing she doesn't show in Dallas for another game unless they are married.

ROAD WARRIORS

As I woke up and listened to Fox Sports reports this morning, I became aware of an interesting fact about our boys in blue...they only lost one road game this year - the opener in Dallas. That certainly bodes well going into Sunday.
But, there's a reason why Dallas is the #1 seed in the playoffs. Their offense is scary good.

Anyone willing to pay Jessica Simpson to come to the game and root her boyfriend Tony Romo on?

Giants Win

As I begin this column, I am writing about something I never imagined at the beginning of the season - the Giants in the playoffs. Hell, I bet on the Giants winning less than 8 games in Vegas when I was there in August...I lost that one.

Today's game reflected the Giants season...lousy start, great ending. The Defense played well, and Eli didn't make a mistake. It was a great win in Tampa, but now we need to go to Big D and face the Cowboys. It will take another big effort to beat Dallas.

An afterthought - I was having a discussion with a fellow fan of Big Blue....and he asked if I thought Coughlin would be back. I never hesitated - he should be back. He's done a good job this year and the Giants made the playoffs for a third stright season...something not done since the 80's. The issue is who replaces him if they cut him loose? I don't think the Giants problems are Coughlin related...once again, injuries have hurt and an ineffective running game at times. The Giants need a stud running back to tandem with Brandon Jacobs in roder for Eli and the offense to be successful. The Giants are a couple of players away from the elite of the NFC...if they can keep clear of the injury bug next year, it could be a season to remember. One other point to remember - Coughlin changed his act and I think it made him a better coach.
